Rumi was born in 1207 in the region today known as Afghanistan in the town of Balkh. Rumi spent most of his life in Turkey. He was a spritual master and poetic genius. He was the founder of the Mevlevi Sufi order, a leading mystical brotherhood of Islam. Rumi died on December 17, 1273. That night was named Sebul Arus (Night of Union). The Mevlevi dervishes have kept that date as a festival.
